Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Royalty Support for Kurdish Music

1. What is Mirat?

Mirat is a Kurdish royalty collection society dedicated to preserving Kurdish music and supporting composers, songwriters, publishers, and rights holders. We collect metadata, manage rights, and ensure fair royalty distribution globally.

2. Who can register with Mirat?

You can register with Mirat if you are:

  • A composer, songwriter, label or publisher

  • Follow the steps to sign an agreement with Mirat, followed by an unique Mirat ID

4. What is a Mirat ID, and why do I need it?

The Mirat ID is your unique membership code. It is required when:

  • Submitting works
  • Receiving royalty payments

5. What kind of music can I submit?

You can submit:

  • Traditional or folk Kurdish music
  • Original compositions and unreleased works
  • Historic or archived recordings (if you hold the rights)

Submit only music you legally own or have permission to register.

6. How does royalty collection work?

After registering and signing the Membership Agreement:

  • Your works are represented by Mirat
  • We track and collect royalties from global platforms
  • Royalties are paid to your verified bank account every quarter (3 months “We will work on it in the future to pay artists on a monthly basis”.)

7. What documents do I need to receive royalties?

To receive royalty payments, you must submit:

  • A signed Royalty Collection Membership Agreement
  • A valid government-issued ID
  • A bank statement or official bank letter with your account details

8. Why do I need a bank account? Can I receive cash instead?

Mirat only pays royalties via bank transfer.
Here’s why:

  • All incoming and outgoing royalties are processed electronically
  • We are legally required to show that every payment was received by the correct rights holder
  • Cash payments are untraceable and not supported by our systems

We encourage all artists in Kurdistan and in diaspora to open a bank account—it ensures faster, safer, and legal royalty distribution.

9. What if I am not the original composer?

If you are an inheritor, publisher, label, archivist, archive institution:

  • You must provide legal proof of inheritance
  • If there are multiple inheritors, you may need consent or documentation from others

10. Can I submit metadata without registering?

Yes! Anyone can contribute metadata using our Public Metadata Form.
However, to claim ownership and receive royalties, registration and verification are required.

11. What happens to my data and music submissions?

Your data and submissions are:

  • Stored securely using encrypted royalty management software by a leading technology company.
  • Used only for archiving, rights registration, and royalty collection
  • Not shared without your consent
  • Mirat may share the metadata with archive partners promoting Kurdish music.
